Surface Preparation

This step is essential to obtain a solid base before applying any coating. Our team uses sandblasting to clean and prepare metal surfaces by removing rust, old coatings and impurities, leaving a clean surface ready to receive a high-quality coating.

We can sandblast or strip any project: industrial / commercial / residential to the required SSPC-SP industry standards.

Standard Definitions

  • Solvent Cleaning (SSPC-SP1)

Solvent cleaning removes oil, grease, dirt and other contaminants from steel surfaces.

  • Hand Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP2)

Hand tool cleaning of steel surfaces is carried out using non-mechanical tools.

  • Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP3)

Power tool cleaning of steel surfaces is carried out using power assisted hand tools.

  • White Metal Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP5)

White metal blast cleaning is such that when the surface is examined without the aid of a magnifying glass, there should be no trace of oil, grease, dirt, dust, scale, rust or paint.

  • Commercial Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP6)

Commercial blast cleaning is such that when the surface is examined without the aid of a magnifying glass, there should be no trace of oil, grease, dirt, dust, scale, rust or paint.

Generally speaking, about 33% of the surface will still show traces of discoloration caused by rust, scale or previous paint stains. There may also be rust and paint residues in corrosion cavities if the original surface is rusty.

  • Brush-off Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP7)

Brush-off blast cleaning is such that when the surface is examined without the aid of a magnifying glass, there should be no trace of oil, grease, dirt, dust, scale, rust or paint. Some scale, rust or paint may remain on the surface.

  • Pickling (SSPC-SP8)

Pickling is a surface preparation method that works by chemical reaction, electrolysis or both. When the surface is examined without the aid of a magnifying glass, there should be no trace of scale or rust.

  • Near-White Metal Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP10)

Near-white metal blast cleaning is such that when the surface is examined without the aid of a magnifying glass, there should be no trace of oil, grease, dirt, dust, scale, rust or paint.

Generally, traces of discoloration caused by rust, scale or previous paint stains remain on about 5% of the surface.

  • Bare-Metal Power Tool Cleaning (SSPC-SP11)

Metal surfaces prepared using this method are such that, when examined without the aid of a magnifying glass, there should be no trace of oil, grease, dirt, dust, scale, rust, paint, oxide, corrosive products or any other foreign matter.

Minor rust and paint residues may be present in corrosion cavities if the original surface is rusty.

Surface preparation standards exist to maximize coating life and minimize future costs.
